Is Modafinil addictive?

Initially, when the drug was developed in 1998, Modafinil was used as a drug to treat Narcolepsy. In 2003, the FDA approved the drug for treatment of excessive daytime sleeping and sleep apnea.  Due to some of the qualities that this drug has, it has been prescribed for fatigue. Scientists suggest healthy responsible adults can use Modafinil to improve mental creativity and acuity.  The use of Modafinil in cognitive enhancement has led to the assumption that it may be addictive to those who use it for this purpose.

Studies Done To Show Addictiveness and Liability of Modafinil

Volkow’s studies on the drug were highlighted in Web MD. According to his study, the side effects that Modafinil brings about can lead to addiction. In an experiment to test the addictive nature of the drug, ten healthy men took two PET scans subsequent to taking Provigil or a placebo pill that was inactive. The scans denoted that Modafinil helps obstruct the communication of dopamine transporters. Owing to this quality, Modafinil has been compared to drug triggers caused by methamphetamine and cocaine. However, the mechanism is slower in Modafinil.

Emory University Professor David Weinshenker performed various experiments on Volkow’s mice studies. His findings indicate that indeed, Modafinil has a similar brain receptor to cocaine; however, this does not show Modafinil addictive potential. The professor postulates that there are no addicts around who sell or buy Modafinil. Further, he shows that those who used the drug did not experience a state of being high or ecstasy that is normal to dependence and drug addiction.

Professor Weinshenker concludes that the drug promotes wakefulness but is not an addictive drug. There is no rebound after stimulating wakefulness. As such, the addiction and liability status of Modafinil is very low.

Is Use Of Modafinil A Habit Or Chemical Addiction?

It is true that the drug does promote wakefulness and eliminate fatigue. However, there is no proof that the drug is addictive. There are those who say that they find it hard to skip using the drug; nevertheless, this is not a case of chemical addiction. Rather, it is a habit formed where one feels that they need the drug to stimulate their mental faculties.

Therefore, it is imperative when looking into a drug’s addictive nature to consider the chemical patterns of the drug. As shown in the studies done by Professor Weinshenker, it is clear that the drug is not addictive. Rather, those who use it rush back to pop the pill to improve alertness, reduce fatigue and improve mental acuity.

In conclusion, the article has shown that Modafinil is a smart drug that is essential in boosting wakefulness, improving mental creativity, and reducing lethargic feelings. Considering the number of people who have used the drug worldwide, it is rather clear that there would have been some cases of addiction evident. Nonetheless, there are online forums of those who have used the drug and there has been no mention of addiction to Modafinil by any of these users. There is no rebound effect after use of the said drug whereby a user feels sleepy after the drug wears off. Owing to lack of side effects from Modafinil, it is safe to say that the drug’s addictive qualities are negligible.
